Bird walks begin at 8AM Wednesdays and Saturdays except the first Saturday. They last about two hours and the pace is leisurely. Meeting place is in the parking lot of Big Morongo Canyon, Morongo Valley.

May 9, 2012 Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and Covington Park offer opportunities for birding. On this Wednesday, 17 birders observed 62 species.

Transients continue to pass through the area. On this walk, we saw among others four Red-tailed Hawks which included two chicks; one White-winged Dove was heard; one White-throated Swift which is uncommon; two Olive-sided Flycatcher which is an uncommon transient; two Western Wood-Pewee which is a common transient; one Warbling Vireo which is a common transient; one Rose-breasted Grosbeak which is as rare transient; one Wilson’s Warbler which is rare in summer; and one MacGillivray’s Warbler which is an uncommon transient.



May 16, 2012 Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and Covington Park offer opportunities for birding. On this day, 11 birders saw 50 species of birds.

Transients are still passing through the area. Some of the species seen were one California Quail which is rare yearly; one Red-tailed Hawk which is frequent year round; one White-winged Dove which is rare in the summer; one Greater Roadrunner which is rare during the year; one Black-chinned Hummingbird which is frequent during summer; two Western Wood-Pewee which is a common transient; nine Brown-crested Flycatcher which is frequent during the summer; two Oak Titmouse which is unusual during the year; one White-breasted Nuthatch which is unusual in winter; five Yellow Warbler which is common in summer; four Summer Tanager which is common in summer; 21 Western Tanager which is a frequent transient; two Lazuli Bunting which is uncommon in summer; and nine Bullock’s Oriole.



May 23 2012 Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and Covington Park offer opportunities for birding. On this Wednesday, 10 birders saw 50 species of birds.

Some transients are leaving. Some of the species seen were one Costa’s Hummingbird which is frequent during the year; one Black-chinned Hummingbird which is frequent during the summer; three Anna’s Hummingbird which is frequent during the year; three Black Phoebe which is frequent during the year; three Western Kingbird which is frequent during the summer; five Cassin’s Kingbird which is frequent in the summer; one Common Raven which is frequent during the year; one Verdin which is common during the year; one Cactus Wren which is frequent during the year; five Swainson’s Thrush which is an uncommon transient; eight Phainopepla which is frequent during the year; and two Wilson’s Warbler which is a common transient.
